Students at Church Street School got a glimpse into a wide range of careers when parents and family members visited classrooms throughout the day to share what they do for a living, answer questions and inspire students to think about their own futures.
The White Plains City’s School District’s Preliminary Budget for the 2026-27 school year was presented at the Board of Education meeting on Monday, March 9, 2026. The draft budget includes a 1.60% increase in the tax levy, which is compliant with the state tax cap. Superintendent Dr. Joseph Ricca and Assistant Superintendent for Business and Operations Dr. Ann Vaccaro-Teich provided the community with information on the spending plan, which will be voted on for adoption by the Board on April 13.
It was a page-turner at Church Street School! Families turned out Tuesday for a memorable evening of stories during Family Reading Night, hosted by faculty in partnership with the PTA as part of the district’s PARP (Parents as Reading Partners) initiative and PTA Read-A-Thon. White Plains City School District Superintendent Dr. Joseph Ricca and Mayor Justin Brasch took part in the lively event!
As artificial intelligence continues to evolve at a rapid pace, White Plains educators and technology experts said schools must take a measured but urgent approach to integrating the technology into classrooms with safeguards across grade levels, as appropriate.
Fifth-grade members of the Student Council at Church Street School helped make a difference in their community by organizing the school’s participation in the annual Souper Bowl of Caring food drive.
With Earth Day approaching in April, students at Church Street School learned how music, creativity and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand during a thunderous "Bash the Trash" performance sponsored by the school’s PTA.
George Washington Elementary School students put their hypotheses to the test, and they presented their findings at the annual STEM Fair on Thursday. Students presented their experiments and research to their classmates during the day, and the final projects were shown after school to parents and judges, including White Plains staff and community partners.

The White Plains City School District wishes the best of luck to two White Plains High School athletes who are competing in the NYSPHSAA Championships next week! Kellen Doherty, a ninth-grade student, will compete in the Skiing State Championships on Monday, February 23 and Tuesday, February 24 at Bristol Mountain. Genesis Garcia, an 11th grader, will compete in the Girls Wrestling Championships on Thursday, February 26 in Albany. Charles “Chuck” Stogel, a veteran sportswriter and editor, and longtime president of the Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association, has been chosen for induction into the New York City Basketball Hall of Fame.
The induction ceremonies for the NYC Hoops Hall Class of 2025, which includes seven other distinguished individuals plus one professional and one college basketball team, is scheduled for Tuesday evening, Feb. 24, 2026, at the New York Hilton Midtown Hotel in Manhattan (hoopshallny.org).
Genesis Garcia, an eleventh-grade student at White Plains High School, competed in the Section 1 Girls Wrestling Championships over the weekend and won her weight class! Congratulations to the new Section 1 Champion! Genesis will represent WPHS and compete for the state championship at the NYSPHSAA Girls Wrestling Championships on Thursday, February 26, in Albany.
Due to the winter weather/icy conditions at this time, and in the interest of safety, the WPCSD will observe a 2 HOUR DELAYED OPENING today, Wednesday, February 11, 2026.
White Plains High School student-athletes have been proving themselves all year! Recently, 11th-grade diver Jack Cullen broke the team record – again – for the 11 dive with a new score of 425.60. Earlier this season, he set the record at 421.1. Also, senior football player Isaiah Pierre was named as an honorable mention for this year’s Section 1 Golden Dozen Scholar Athlete class, which was announced on January 30.

The 21 counselors in the White Plains City School District wear many hats: academic advisers, close confidantes, calm mediators, relentless advocates and trusted guides.On any given day, they may help a fifth-grader calm racing thoughts, walk a seventh-grader through peer conflict, coach a high school student through class planning or listen to a teenager who just needs to be heard. It’s National School Counseling Week, which focuses “public attention on the unique contribution of school counselors within U.S. school systems,” according to the American School Counselor Association.
The spring 2026 session of Saturday STEM Academy for grades 1 to 12 on the Mercy University Westchester campus, 555 Broadway, Dobbs Ferry, takes place February 28 to March 21 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. The cost is $309 per student – and snacks are included. The registration deadline is February 20.
White Plains High School Presents: Once Upon a Mattress. WPHS students will perform in their musical production at 7 p.m. on Friday, February 6, and Saturday, February 7. They will perform again at 2 p.m. on Sunday, February 8. Tickets are $15 for general admission and $10 for students, seniors and WPCSD faculty. Join us in supporting our students! #WPProud
A group of fifth-grade students at Church Street Elementary School enjoyed special recess activities on Friday, as they were joined by their mentors – volunteers from Grandpas United – for tabletop games such as Battleship and Jenga.
About a dozen parents gathered at Eastview School on Tuesday for an informational presentation about the White Plains City School District’s elementary dual-language program, whose goal is to create bilingual, bicultural, self-confident, lifelong learners.
The White Plains City School District’s updated Long-Range Plan was presented to the community at the Board of Education meeting Monday, January 12, 2026. Dr. Joseph Ricca, Superintendent, and Dr. Ann Vaccaro-Teich, Assistant Superintendent for Business and Operations, outlined the district’s organizational and financial forecast through the 2029-30 school year and discussed the priorities of different departments during the presentation.
For Ema Zdravkovic, success is spelled O-N-S-L-A-U-G-H-T. That word — onslaught — sealed victory for the fourth-grader at Church Street Elementary School on Wednesday morning during the fourth- and fifth-grade spelling bee, a nearly two-hour competition that tested vocabulary, courage and composure.
